Women Need To Wear Bike Helmets

OK, how many of us “over 40″ have recently gotten back into bicycle riding? Did you know that bicycling is one of the fastest growing activities for anyone over 40? For most women, especially if you haven’t ridden a bike for awhile, getting the right equipment seems a bit foreign to us. First of all, many of us grew up when nobody, and I mean NOBODY wore helmets. Well, it is time for all of us to realize that we MUST wear a helmet. I’m a woman almost fifty and I can tell you first hand that you will fall and you helmet will protect you.

Now I know what you are thinking, I don’t want to wear some big, heavy, ugly helmet. Well, go to a real bike store, or an online store such as www.womenscyclingapparel.org and pick one out made for women. You will be very surprised as to how light they are. Also, there are helmets made specifically for women too. These helmets are a bit smaller than most men’s helmets and come in a variety of colors. No not ugly colors. Lavender, pink, light blue and even plain white. They are all fully vented and all of the straps inside and under the chin are adjustable. Also, you can shop for matching shirts and shorts as well.

Once you have purchased your helmet, WEAR IT. Forget about having bad hair, the safety of having one is well worth having hair that doesn’t look so good. Also, as I mentioned, I have had two different bike incidents and hit my head on both. I had no head injuries and was glad I had the helmet. Keep in mind, if you fall and hit your head even once in your helmet YOU MUST REPLACE the helmet. Their safety is compromised if you have actually hit your head.

Be safe and have a good ride!
